A big yay to the wonderful people at Evil Hat. I wasn't terribly familiar with the Fate system but a friend from the Overthinkers pointed me and my sweetie towards their kickstarter a while back. We have the book, sweetie also got the accelerated version.

My darling Nexx's book was dinged pretty badly on the corners, but the Evil Hat guys had had word of that happening to others and offered free exchanges. Nexx ended up getting in a little late, so they told him not to bother with sending the dinged one back.

The book is easy to follow, the game is seriously big on the interactive part of storytelling. I also like that the sample game they use has equal parts men and women and one of the women is the GM.

Loving the game. I also found an iPad app with the character sheet for $2.99. Worth it.

For those unfamiliar, when you create a character, you don't roll things up or use a point buy. Instead, you choose from a list of skills that you might be average, fair, good, or great. These get set up in a pyramid, most expertise on top. You create "aspects" which are best translated as motivations for your character.

Your dice are 4 6-sided fudge dice. Two +, two - and two blank. There is much less arithmetic. For example, my Ninja is great at fighting, so she starts with a score of 4. I role the fudge dice and/subtract. Say I rolled +2, I can say, "That's a great roll, she punched the bastard and broke his nose."

I am not being paid for this endorsement. :) If you love the storytelling aspect of pen & paper RPG's, give it a whirl. You can use any setting.

I love fate. I played a version of it a few years ago - the aspects really appealed me. Unfortunately I missed the kickstarter but bought the pdfs on pay what you want.


You may also like dungeon world which is a hack of apocalypse world - both really simple systems that encourage role rather than roll playing. One of the core rules for the day GM is "be a fan of the characters". I'm really hoping to run dungeon world but hack in aspects, in the near future. I think the two systems will merge quite nicely

We prefer Pathfinder, for its "console RPG" feel, but we basically have to explain how it works to everyone that we play with. It only takes a few minutes in person, though, and it's less abstract than FATE's heavily narrative-based system.
