This is basically exactly what it says on the tin. A chance to review what you're currently playing, or what you last played.

What are you playing right now/have just finished playing? What platform is it on? What genre is it? Did you enjoy it? Would you recommend it? What's the fandom like? Anything you want to say about the game.

I'm currently playing Final Fantasy IV DS. I played the original, so the story isn't exactly new or surprising to me. I'm currently rather liking the new cutscenes though, that add a whole extra level of emotion to certain scenes for me. For those that have never played Final Fantasy IV, it was originally a SNES game that has been remastered for the DS. It is an RPG where you take the role of Cecil, a dark knight who is forced to abandon his Kingdom because of his principles. The plot seems to be about Cecil going around defeating bad guys and saving Crystals (similar to Final Fantasy III) but Final Fantasy IV also has a love story at the heart of it, and can be quite moving because of it. It's definitely one of the best of the pre-PS ones (just behind VI). It's recommended~

I'm currently playing through Silent Hill: Homecoming with my other half. It's a bloody good game. The combat system has been upped from the previous games, with a better arsenal of weapons at your disposal - you can also dodge attacks (although this is slightly buggy, something they need to work on). The atmosphere is awesome, they've really upped that as well from the previous games and there's that constant feeling of fear at the back of your mind as you play it through.
And the story, oh the story! Don't worry I won't spoil you - you play through as Alex Shephard, a soldier discharged from active duty and he returns home to Shephard's Glen to find the town gone wierd, his little brother missing and he vows to find out what's going on. Cue lots and lots of angst - what more can you ask for?!
It's a long game, and the story is absolutely fantastic - very similar to the storyline of the first game. But it really brings together a lot of elements from the previous games I feel. And in my mind, it does a better job! We see the return of some favourite enemies including those freaky nurses, the same mind bendingly difficult puzzles and of course that fear that just makes you want to play on.
Oh and of course, it has a top notch soundtrack by Akira Yamoaka!
I would definitely recomend this game, 9 out of 10 for sure.

see, we haven't finished it yet so I'm not quite sure if it ties in completely with the earlier games. It seems to link in more with the movie :S But I think if you play it as a stand alone game it should be ok

XD awesome
just a warning, if you get scared easily, don't play it in the dark before bed...I had bad nightmares last night XDXD

From: [personal profile] salmonpuff

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Dude, seriously...play it in the middle of the day then XD. We finished playing last night at about 3am and then I'm having this freaky ass dream that involved lots and lots of creepy silent hill ness *shudder*

Play it, and I'll give you a high five! I know a lot of people who have refused to play it because of the fear factor XD

Pardon the intrusion but gah! Horror movies and SH/RE games have scarred me for life and I swear I have delusions about umbilical cords DX
I've heard The Room isn't the scariest game in the series but I was sooo creeped out, even during the day.

FF4DS! Love~! (says the girl who owns every version of FF4 ever released.....not that I'm obsessed...anyway....)

Currently finishing up FF Tactics Advance 2 on the DS - I've cleared the main boss, and have done 293 out of 300 side quests. Those last 7 are a bitch. *grumbles* It's far better than FFTA in terms of both gameplay and story; neither is as good as the original FF Tactics or the War of the Lions re-release of same.

Also re-playing Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4, which is freaking amazing. Not for those who hate the level-grind, and not for those who don't want to carefully manage their game at all times, but if you can do those two things it's absolutely amazing, with rich characters and a disturbing story. (Its predecessor, Persona 3, is equally gorgeous.)

I think that covers most of my active list :)

The world is actually my favourite part of FFT/FF12 - the tactics take some getting used to, because I'm not that way inclined by nature, but I love Ivalice like burning. The layered politics, the LANGUAGE oh God I could roll in it, everything. (FF12, by the way, becomes immeasurably easier if you abuse gambits to set Protect and Shell on your allies at all times. Also, always go for Augments unless you are actively in the process of buying new equipment, spells, or Technicks.)

I did not like the MMO as much, but that might be my general distaste for the genre speaking. If you're looking to get into SMT, I personally would recommend either Persona 4 (which I know is out in the UK as a friend there has it) or Digital Devil Saga, which is rather hard to find.

Friend away! Hi! :)

I had a very hard time finding DDS - I think I spent $80 on the first and $90 on the second.

If you're going to do both P3 and P4, and you *know* you want to play both, I'll just point out that Persona 4 improved on many aspects of Persona 3, so going "back" to P3 after P4 might be hard to do. Also, P4 takes a lot longer to get started (the intro sequence is loooong), so it's easier to jump right into P3. I love both of them pretty much equally for different reasons, though, so take that with as many grains of salt as necessary XD

Ah, you're just ahead of where I am in my second replay :)

I can see your annoyance if you find FF12 too Shakespearean; for me, I find it gorgeous and I like the verbal complexities, but I must admit I'm also pretentious and a linguistic nerd. So. XD

Haha, my general one-liner description of Persona 3 is "Shooting yourself in the head with a magic gun to summon giant penis demons." Which gets me the most hilarious responses EVER.

I have enough knowledge of Roman and Greek history to make an ass of myself when I try to overreach my own limits, and a slight grounding in Ancient Egypt. I keep meaning to do more research on Mesopotamia, too. XD
lassarina: (All knowledge is worth having)

Persona 3 is one giant tentacle joke, honestly XD Or at least I read it that way, but I'm permanently gutter-brained.

I took Latin for six years, and got a pretty solid grounding in Roman history. I find it all hilarious, basically, which probably makes me a terrible person but there you go.

My medieval history obsession was the Plantagenets, basically from Henry II to King John (so, covering the Magna Carta, one of the Crusades, Richard the Lionhearted who was epically awesome in a lot of ways and failboat ahoy in others, and Eleanor of Aquitaine who was pretty badass for a woman in that era). I haven't done much research since graduating. Maybe I should look into that. XD

Mm. I have persona 3 FES, and I have to agree. The Shin Megami Tensei games are all pretty amazing, but Persona is my favorite.

Right now I'm playing two games actively. Okay, technically more than two, but these are the two I've most recently played barring my messing around with our new copy of Mario Kart Wii (our mother bought it for both of us XD) and messing around with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (I didn't have a Game Cube, so I have to catch up on those too).

Anyways, on the DS, I've been playing Drawn to Life. It's a cute platformer type game that I've actually been doing well at. Mario has always been hard for me mostly because you can't really save easily, but in Drawn to Life, it automatically saves your game all the time whenever you color in something or draw something, so it's not as hard for me. I can do one level in one sitting easily and I don't have to do more than one level before getting to a place that I can save.

It's fun also because you get to color in the items that you have to use in the levels like a hang-glider and in some levels, you get to use wings that you drew for your own character, which you can draw for yourself. :D Also, there are objects such as the clouds you jump on that you draw yourself.

As for the plot, it's basically that you're the creator to these cute little critters (at least they look so to me) and their world is being taken over by shadow and one of them prays to the creator for help and your character is created to help them out. There's more to the plot, but in general it's cute and um, I probably need to get further into the game.

The other game I've been playing is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. It's on the Wii, but it's a WiiWare game. That's a cute game too and you basically get to build your own kingdom and also have to run the kingdom and send adventurers out to explore dungeons since you can't go yourself. You decide where the buildings are built and you have to send the adventurers out to get the materials to build. There is also a plot dealing with the young King's father and the Darklord that used to rule there. One of the pluses to this game is that you can also buy extra stuff for the game using Wii Points such as different buildings and extra dungeons.

The other games I have in progress are Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (for Wii), Final Fantasy III (for DS), and Lego Batman: The Videogame (PS2). I'll probably start playing the last one again once I have the time and have unpacked my video games from the car. I've just come home from college and I still need to get settled in.

I'm in the middle of two games. Fallout 3 -- I've been playing since, oh, January? I keep getting distracted by sidequests and resetting when Dogmeat dies. I'm a big fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, so the setting is perfect for me. I love games that let you role-play as either good or evil (although I wish more games did it like Mass Effect -- you could, if you played it right, be both good and bad, which is more true to life) so it has that going for it, and I love doggies. Yes, all these things are incredible superficial, shoosh. I do enjoy the plot, but honestly I'm having more fun with the sidequests. There are just so many fully formed personalities roaming around in this game, so much stuff to do -- I'm loathe to actually FINISH it. When I exited the vault and stood on the overlook, saw the broken and battered landscape, the half standing houses, the pitched over power lines, the crumbling bridge in the distance, I was awed. Never has a game been so stunning that I literally sat and stared for several minutes before being able to pick up the controller again.

So yeah, I like it.

Also playing Lost Odyssey, which is decent enough. The characters are likable and the combat system works without being to difficult. There are enough sidequests and collectables to appease the completionist in me. There's also A Thousand Years of Dreams -- 30 or so short stories complemented with sound and still illustrations that flesh out Kaim as a character. I could stand for more games to do something like this -- I'm a reader, I have no problem with walls of text, as long as said text is engaging. If you like RPGs, it's worth a play.

Yeah, it's 360. So is my version of Fallout. Can't afford the PS3 just yet, sadly.

*Hijack* One thing about Fallout for the PS3, though, is there's no downloadable content for it, and they don't lift the puny level cap. Only the Xboxers get those privileges. :(

Fallout3 was fun, but I found the character creation weak and almost meaningless considering the gameplay... Not to mention the trophies/achievements are piss to get. Ha ha.

I'm currently playing We ♥ Katamari and Final Fantasy X. Both are really good in completely different ways. With Katamari, I love the absurdity and the fun of picking up a ton of people in a row and hearing the screams overlap. With FFX, I love the beautiful graphics and pretty music. Also, the sphere grid method of gaining abilities is surprisingly entertaining.
lecari: (Default)

From: [personal profile] lecari

I'm playing FFX at the moment too :) It's my first time playing it, though an ex was *obsessed* with it so it's not 'new' to me (I ended up having to watch him play it a lot).

I didn't like the sphere grid at first, but it is growing on me. I'm getting a bit bored of the cut-scenes though, and I can't seem to ever beat the other summoner who asks to battle you for fun (I've not really found it too challenging so far to be honest, except for those, grr). I'm enjoying it though, despite that. Just wish I could skip the cut-scenes sometimes!
insilhouette: Amanda Palmer (Default)

From: [personal profile] insilhouette

Yeah, the cut scenes are so close together. There's no time to actually play the game! At least there's no 3-hour cut scene like in Kingdom Hearts 2. I also love playing blitzball! I love when games have optional fun stuff like that to get away from the grind of cutscene, fight, cutscene, fight.
lecari: (Default)

From: [personal profile] lecari

I agree - it's basically just a slightly interactive movie :(

I personally hate Blitzball though, I just don't get it. All my players are rubbish, how am I supposed to ever win anything? I always lose 4-0 or something ridiculous as I'm always against decent players (3 of mine are still level 1?!?). I never play it as it seems so pointless, to me it's just a waste of time :/

FFX is one of my favorite Final Fantasies. And I'm not ashamed to say that, because VI and I are my other favorites. Ha ha. Katamari, also a good choice. Kudos to your taste in games.

I can see by your icon that you're already a fan of what I'm playing, but I'll post a review anyways for the benefit of anyone else reading.

The World Ends With You is a great, astonishingly complex game. The gameplay (it's for the DS) is very unique, very fun--you can easily get yourself up to high levels without even realizing it because the game is just that fun. The story is about a loner misanthrope named Neku Sakuraba, who finds himself stuck in an alternate version of Shibuya, Tokyo, forced to complete missions given by "Reapers" or face erasure. As the story progresses, you learn more about why this alternate Shibuya exists, how Neku cme to be stuck there, and who and what the Reapers are. Neku also grows tremendously as a character during his ordeal, and the cast of supporting characters is engaging and often funny as well. I recommend it highly.

I thought this looked really interesting, but now it's definitely a game I'll check out :)

Good good! My one recommendation is to make use of the TWEWY wiki, as complicated game is complicated. Also it's a bit hard until you get the hang of it, and find attack strategies that you like.
lecari: (Default)

From: [personal profile] lecari

As well as FFX as I mentioned above, I've also been playing Kingdom Hearts. I basically got it when it came out as I love Disney films and it was too enticing not to. But I *still* haven't finished it (I got stuck OK! lol). Several years and a strategy guide later, I have almost finished Agrabar. haha. It is a lovely game, really cute and I love all the Disney themed levels! And Winnie the Pooh! :D But I am not so good at platform games/doing jumps, so that can get frustrating. (Especially in places where if you miss the jump, you have to start over again.) I've had to get my boyfriend to do jumps for me a number of times as otherwise I just wouldn't play it again out of frustration! (I'm really not very patient..!)
tegu: (Default)

From: [personal profile] tegu

XD Yay for Kingdom Hearts. If it makes you feel any better, the sequels are not nearly as big on the platforming; they play more like a straight adventure/RPG game.
lecari: (Default)

From: [personal profile] lecari

I do own the sequel on the PS2, I bought it ages ago and plan on playing it after I finish 1. So that is definitely good news :D

I own all the Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia games, and I have no idea why because they infuriate me to no end! I liked the new PoP, where you don't die, you just go back to where the jump started - I wish more games would adopt that method as it saved me so much stress!

From: [personal profile] sousora

I guess the last game I finished was Resident Evil 5. Other than that, I've been playing Final Fantasy 1 and Bully for quite some time. By quite some time, I mean close to a year for both, haha. I get so busy that the games get put aside for long periods of time and I occasionally forget I have them... should try play them again today while I have some time.

I would definitely recommend both, particularly Bully. That game is just so much fun.

I've always wanted to try Bully, but I've never had the chance.

Right now I'm playing Drakengard 2, for the PS2. I just finished the first Drakengard, and found the second for 10 bucks secondhand, so I thought I'd give it a go (plus it's better to have a complete set, imo, as long as they're both good). So far I'm really enjoying it, I prefer Caim to Nowe, and the story is definately not as fucked as the first drakengard. It's an action RPG, you go around and hack and slash button mash until everything is dead, occasionally jumping on your dragon to decimate entire armies (or do air missions), levelling up weapons (and yourself) as you go. The first was better for the levelling up, imo, because the weapons actually changed their appearence as you went, but you still get story every time you level them up, so it's pretty deep with plot no matter what you do.

I'd definately recommend both games, though I have no idea what the fandom is like. So far I see a few who didn't like the second game at all (purists, every fandom has them), those who like the second game better than the first (the newbies, again, every fandom has them... I like to call them "vii-ites". heh.) and the ones clinging to the blind hope that there's going to be a third game for the PS3. Personally, I think it'd be cool if they did, but I'm not holding out hope.

(I'm so bad at replying in the wrong place. fff...)
