Hello

New to Dreamwidth and getting back into gaming after not playing for several years. I used to play several games on various versions of Nintendo and then later the Playstations. Recently I bought a PS3 and Metal Gear Solid 2 after reading a few reviews, and I'm looking for recommendations for additional games.

I'm interested in first person shooter/role playing games, preferably with a science fiction setting. Since I'm hard of hearing there needs to be subtitles for dialogue and other audio cues in game play.

I also wouldn't mind adding more people to my reading list!

I recommend Mass Effect 2! I believe it's available for the PS3. :D And it's not FPS or RPG, but I have to make the obligatory Assassin's Creed recommendation. XD

I second the Assassin's Creed series. If you liked Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven (PS2), you will LOVE AC.

I haven't played Tenchu, actually. :O I'll have to research this game.

It's so great <3 I think, as far as gameplay goes, it helped perfect AC. I don't know what it'd be like if you play this after playing AC though x_x

Ha~ I Youtube'd some gameplay footage, and I can totally see the influence for AC. Though, I'm not sure if I'd be able to play it. XD

I second the Mass Effect recommendation! :)

Though I suggest you play the first game to get the full experience!

i could have sworn you could but i might just be thinking like a pc gamer again. :)

Thirding the Mass Effect recommendations. Start with number 1 first, it's well worth it, then you can progress into number 2 and be ready for number 3 when it comes out in March!

Unfortunately I only play PC so any other games I might be able to recommend would be PC only, sorry :(

Ohhh okay. That's a shame really because IMHO the story is much better in 1, though the gameplay is better in 2. Never mind that then, LOL!

I'm not big on FPS games, but Deadspace seems to be a good game, and I like the Gears of War games!

Ooh, Deus Ex: Human Revolution pretty much hits your search for a scifi shooter/rpg on the head! The original Deus Ex is also extremely good, but it's only available on PC.

I think you might also enjoy the Half-Life games, which are a series of scifi-ish shooters. The main series is out as part of the Orange Box collection, which also contains two other good games (Portal and Team Fortress 2). The collection's ridiculously cheap these days as well (I picked mine up for £8 a few years ago).

You say you like the Science Fiction setting? I recommend Bio Shock!! It's a first person shooter in it's own right. I remember I refused to play it because I was always afraid it looked like those creepy games that would keep me up at night! But it actually has an awesome storyline. At actually, at times it does get kinda creepy! XD But it's good! ;)

Let me know what you think of MGS2! I love that series but part 2 confused me a bit.

The controls are a bit different than most games I've ever played too. Maybe that's why I like it so much. Resident Evil is the same way with a wonky control system (especially if you play the first ones!). Still, they're fun. ;) And glad to know you're enjoying it.

I definitely agree with the rec for Mass Effect, Bioshock and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Mass Effect is actually a third-person shooter, but it's an excellent space opera style sci-fi. The PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 comes bundled with Genesis, which is an interactive comic that summarises the story of the first game and lets you make the more important choices in it ready to import into the second. If it plays like it does on Xbox, it'll kick in by itself after the first section on your ship.

Bioshock has a 1940s era aesthetic with a twist. It's really good, but set on earth and not a typical sci-fi.

And Deus Ex is probably better described as Cyberpunk. So if you're into dystopian future settings, you'll probably like it.

There's Borderlands, which is sort of a bit Mad Max desert bandit style, but it's set on a different (fictional) planet and has aliens, so I guess it qualifies. It's great in co-op.

Perhaps Half-Life 2 and Hard Reset (oh, actually, I think HR is PC only)? Overstrike might also be worth keeping an eye on, but it's not out yet.

And if you're still looking to add people, I'm always open to meeting new gamers. :)

Oh yes, I remember trying to play my xbox on my old 34cm CRT set. It was impossible!

Added back! :)
