I feel a little embarrassed posting such a basic question, but hopefully you guys won't judge me!

I'm playing Dissida 012 Final Fantasy for the PSP, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to cure my character. I'm still in the first level, trying to fight Kuja, and my HP is low from battling the various enemies elsewhere in the level.

A google search reveals, "Use a potion!" or "Cure!" or "Go into EX-mode!"
I can't figure out how to do any of these things, :(

It's very frustrating! I think this might be the least intuitive game I've played so far. I hope I get the hang of it, because it's like..."An AU where all the cool kids hang out! Yayyy!"

I haven't played FF XIII yet (no PS3), but Lightning seems like a totally awesome character.

Actually I recommend going to GameFAQS and looking up one of the FAQs there; it's even odds that SOMEBODY has taken the time to write out all the button commands and such for things like getting into EX mode.

The glowing light-things (Chains etc.) are the same things that will also sometimes give you Cures.

You can always try switching to RPG mode, or honestly I eventually through sheer perseverance got better at dodging (I....think it's L + circle? It's been long enough, and I am muscle-memory trained enough, that I don't remember the actual buttons.)

ah, yes, always always always snipe as much bravery as you possibly can before going for the HP hit. The reason: the more bravery you have, the more damage you do when you hit for HP. If you can, knock your opponent's bravery down to zero (bravery break); it gives you the stage bravery, which is usually a sizable boost, and I usually won battles by getting in two brave-breaks and two associated HP hits.

I played on action mode, but that's mostly because I am idiotically stubborn. If I ever go back to finish all the extra stuff in Dissidia, I will almost certainly have to do it in RPG mode. I'm just good enough to get through on sheer determination, but not enough for extras.
