I am loving the DM hat, and am also reasonably thankful that we have a few weeks between sessions so I can prepare.
Last session, I got a very high compliment. One of the players really prefers role-playing and story over combat, partly because he loathes the way D&D 4e manages combat. I had set up a bar fight (gotta have a bar fight here and there), and the compliment was he really enjoyed it because I had incorporated it well into the story. I haven't been one for random encounters.
This coming session, I am hoping to again make the best of both words. I have been torturing one of the characters with moral choices (he seems to be enjoying it) and instead of letting himself be initiated into an evil cult, he attacked. There is a chapterhouse to sack and a dragon wyrmling hanging out in the sub-basement. There is also the inquiry into the bar fight. It seems an elite member of the Church's enforcers was killed after attacking some of the patrons. (she was actually forced to attack by one of my PC's. My boyfriend, as it happens, who is playing a character with PTSD and who is a manipulative bitch of a psion).
So, I'm giving folks what I hope will be an opportunity to role-play something else. Part of this is because sometimes these guys get bored with characters and kill them off. So they're going to also play some witnesses to the bar fight.
