Alright so I've been playing Illyriad for a week or so now.
I have an alt. This should tell you something about the game. When someone whose only played for a week already has an alt on an MMORTS. That by the way says YOU CAN have TWO accounts, but no more. I'm really happy with my main city but my alt's capital looks so much more organized. I guess that's how it'll be then. I've already marked out some spots that I'm going over with my Alliance Leaders on Tanarilling over to.Yes I just made a verb. Tanaril's Teleportation spell is a one time only deal so use it wisely.
You can either do that or Exodus.
Sorry there's nothing to do with the Bible, but everything to do with taking your city apart and rebuilding it again in another spot.
So I am in an alliance called Kaendran Crows, which is one of get this, eight Crow branches in this big ol' Crow Confederacy.
Puts a whole 'nother spin on eating crow now doesn't it?
The Crows which is the overall, big umbrella for the other branches, are one of the oldest and largest Confederacies/Alliances in Illyriad; which is about 2.5 years old? So it's younger than Star Trek Online but just as much fun I think. Anyway the reason why that I mention this is that right now in Illyriad there's a war going on.
Now in most RTS' especially MMORTS wars are a usual thing but in Illyriad its something way different almost akin to real life. Because of the time/player investment, and the community while big has a small town feel and the fact the alliances that are at war have consumed roughly 1/3rd of the sever population.
YEAH!
Let me put it this way, this war has got a lot of folks twisted about it'd be like if a 3rd of the WoW Population suddenly started PvPing right in the middle of everything. It's huge, and the Crows are neutral.
So part of this war has to do with failed diplomacy. Which generally is just about every war, right? Right, anyway. Part of what is Illyriad is the complexity of player relationships. In addition to the tools of an army you have diplomacy and it's something that the Crows do.
You know that quote from Roosevelt? Speak softly but carry a big stick? Yes, that's the Crows and while each various branch plays and operate different, NONE of them stray from this simple principle, and it's that simple principle that has kept them out of all these little conflicts.
And me? I want to trade, and focus each city into building weapons but a specialty, like City A makes Swords, and City B makes Bows and Arrows, because you can't do it all, not with plot limits. What's that you ask? Yes, you have building plots, 25 empty plots to build whatever your heart desires, and 25 is all you get so 25 is what you work with. You can demo buildings when you see the need to. But you have to research that of course.
Some alliances stay to certain parts of the said 4M+ Square Map, yes M, for Million. I did not make a typo. The Crows as stated are everywhere, there's not a part of that map on Illyriad where you will not find a Crow near by.
But there are PLENTY of other alliances, and new ones that spring up like The Corrupted and the United Traders Union. All ran by really good folks, and by the way creating an alliance is not like just making a random guild or fleet whatever, it costs a lot of in game cash to do it so you'd better have some people willing to join or be out in GC recruiting.
It's also hard to make an alliance work, how those in mine do it I don't know but there's a lot to it because, there's a lot to Illyriad. The complexity of players just makes that hard, its like running a guild. Not easy.
It's way more complex than Settlers Online, or Evony. It's more interactive and community driven, much like Star Trek Online folks get to have their battle of the wits with Devs, the Devs are here in Illyriad.
So as I work my way into Week 2, I've got my Warehouse, working on Sovereignty [told you it was more complicated], and trying to figure out how to best make my capital city into a Calvary City in the spot that I'm going to be at if my Alliance Leaders are good with the spots. Oh and it's not JUST oh pick a spot and move, there's resources to consider, and the nearby resources and what is of value, et all.
I'll let you girls and guys know on the next Illyriad Blog.
P.S. Always chat in GC and always, always remember this is a game that you can set it but don't forget it otherwise you loose time on a project that could be going on while you're at work/out to dinner/on the toilet, whatever. When Luke wakes up in the night I make his bottle and check on my towns, because I know I probably have time to start up a new building project or research then go back to bed.
P.S.S. My Alt is Lady Siioul and she's in mCrow, Murder of the Crows, lovely name ain't it? I think so!
