So I was gazing at my wall idly when I woke up today and contemplated this:

[Akira Toryama art for the classic JRPG Chrono Trigger]

...after a nanosecond of habitual eyerolling that, no, Marle's element is *Ice*, not Fire, I basked in a little fluffy nostalgia, and it got me thinking:

To this day, I LOVE Crono's final tech Luminaire. I love everything about it: that it's friggin powerful, the sound effects, the screen-whiteout -- it's appropriately epic without being too lengthy or overwrought. (I'm looking at you, Knights of the Rounds!! [FF7].)

I remember levelling tech points like CRAZY on stupid Mount Doom only so could have this tech already before facing the boss on top of the mountain; which is relatively early in the game for a final tech. (That area's still burned into my mind!)

(If you've played Chrono Trigger: what was the earliest point in that game that you acquired Luminaire?)

So: what is your favourite spell/tech/game move? Or what is the most memorable one, to you?

Tell me your stories! :D

I have a mind like a sieve, so off the top of my head: Firestorm in Dragon Age 2. FIRE FROM THE SKY UPON ALL MY FOES :D

Oh, I love the animations of summons in Final Fantasy games (the only JRPGs I've played) I think the only reason I didn't mention them is it's been a while since I played any :) I vaguely remember there were some summons in FFX that I found really compelling but I can't remember what they were, now it's bugging me. But any time you fight an almost impossible boss and then they either they join your team or you steal their technique is very satisfying.

There was something visceral about Firestorm, it didn't feel like a cool animation it felt like I was actually bringing fire down from the sky. But I have a thing for setting fire to stuff :D

Oh gosh, I can't remember the earliest time I got Luminaire - I think it might have been just before entering the Underwater Palace? I seem to remember having something uber-powerful and rather unnecessary for that area on one playthrough. But it might have been Lucca's Flare.

Speaking of Chrono Trigger, Magus' Dark Matter totally blew me away when I first played the game. I was like OMG SPAAAAAAAACE! OMG TRIANGLE! To my pre-teen brain it seemed like a rip in the space-time continuum really had opened up on my tv screen.

More broadly, I have very fond memories of the 'Legion' skill from Phantasy Star IV. Stars exploding all over the screen! :D The sound effect was very...chime-like but powerful too. Distinctive, and I can still recall it clearly after all these years.

More recently, I though FFX's rendition of Holy was pretty great.

*laughs* I'm currently replaying Chrono Trigger. Like, right as I read this I am level-grinding with Lucca, Marle and Ayla.

My favourite... I don't honestly know. I do like Frog Squash a lot, though. Pretty.

The earliest point I learned Luminaire? The very first time I played through the game, after Frog is forced in your party for the fight against Magus, I became obsessed with level-whoring everyone. Crono and Frog had to stay, so it was easy for them to max out. I got all of Marle's, Lucca's, and Robo's single techs -- and by extension, Crono's. XD;

I did it by going back and forth through the two labs with the giant tomato monster-things in the Future.

(... Magus was a pushover at that point, obviously, LOL. ^^;)

I love Luminaire to death -- but I also love Dark Eternal, the Twister triple tech, and ... what's it called, the one where Robo spins Crono and Lucca spices it up with some FIRE. I loved how the spinning was drowned out a little by Lucca's spell.

But as for straight-up practicality -- like, how I defeated Lavos -- it was Antipode 3.

It's been a while since I played Chrono Trigger, so I can't really say much about the techs there, but I can talk about what I've liked in other games.

I've really liked the summons in Final Fantasy games even when they're long, but I think my favorite FF summons has got to be some of the ones Zack has in Crisis Core. Basically the chocobo, magic pot and cactuar ones always make me laugh. They're just so hilarious. I'm always happy when they show up on the reel.

I love how overblown some of the summon sequences are in the FF games.

I was going to reply to this yesterday, but I couldn't think of anything. But now after playing Tactics Advance, I've got to say that my favourite tech (at the moment, subject to change) is Air Render - because it lets you pull off damage at a distance, which is useful if say, everyone in the opposing team has counter or similar equipped.

I love cure from Final Fantasy VI. Somehow one of the first magicks I fell in love with and still one of my favourites. The glitter-green sparkles that wash over you and make you feel better, how nice ♥

Floral Fallal -- Final Fantasy X-2.

Cheesy, but I just love how flowery/pretty it is.

Other than that, I'd still have to stay FFX, the original, had a lot of really neat moves and just was very pretty to me.
