I ended up being able to beat him! Working on the bravery-steals before hitting helped me, I think. Plus, there's an accessory in a chest right before the battle that seriously increases your attacks - I think I might not have equipped it the first time, :[

I've been playing in RPG mode the whole time, which perhaps speaks to how much I need it, ^^;;
