My first stint at being a DM (D&D 4e) came to an abrupt halt during yesterday's session. We had a nice bit of role-playing as they were thrown out of town and decided where to go next.
Then they were ambushed by a "tax collector" and his guards. And his pet cat. Okay, the cat was a displacer beast, a small one (gotta love customizing monsters).
The problem with this situation, is it wouldn't be logical for the enemy to run away or take them prisoner. I fudged a lot of the damage, but the guards overwhelmed the party (though the Avenger did take down the tax collector).
Maybe I shouldn't have had six guards. Or made them bugbears.
One of the party ran away, so it wasn't a Total Party Kill. I was kind of abashed, but the guys were great about it. They thought it was a great battle, they're happy to play in the world again and I got some great compliments on my storytelling.
I'm going to take a break for a bit. We're going to play Fate for a few weeks, then my boyfriend is going to start up another 4e campaign. I know he wants to do a modern-day setting at some point, but Fate character-generating is a long process, as much as he likes the rules of the game.
I have a ninja for the Fate game, and a predator druid with an alternate wolf form for 4e already created.
