I recently finished an essay on translating video game mechanics to fic. This seems like a relevant place to share it! More meta discussion is always good.
Warning for some strong language.
Video games hold a unique position as one of very few mediums where the player absolutely must actively interact with the medium in order to advance the plotline (we’ll say nothing of the trend in Final Fantasy here). While with books you turn the page and with films you press ‘play’, in RPGs you step into a world wearing the skin of a character and control their actions through the game’s interface. You, the player with the controller, have full agency over the game’s progression, and as a result, video games present a unique set of challenges to the fanfiction writer. This essay discusses some of those challenges and suggests adaptive techniques for dealing with them as a writer.
